Best App or Course to Improve American English Pronunciation

10/21/2026

By Julie Cunningham, MA, CCC-SLP, licensed speech-language pathologist

Short answer: the best choice depends on what you need most. A pronunciation app is good for quick daily drills. A structured online course gives you a step-by-step plan. A coach tells you exactly which sounds and patterns make you hard to understand, and how to change them. If you're not sure where to begin, start with a structured course, then add feedback from a person when you're ready.

I teach American accent and pronunciation online as a licensed speech-language pathologist. This is how the main options compare, and how to choose.

Pronunciation Apps

Good for:

  • Short practice sessions on your phone, whenever you have a few minutes
  • Repeating individual sounds and words many times
  • Automatic scores that show you when a word didn't sound right

Limits:

  • An app can tell you a sound was off, but it can't always tell you why, or show you what to change with your tongue, lips or breath.
  • Many apps focus on single words, while many misunderstandings come from stress, rhythm and intonation in full sentences.

Self-Paced Online Courses

Good for:

  • A clear order to learn in, from sounds to stress, rhythm, reductions and linking
  • Video lessons that show how each sound is made
  • Practicing on your own schedule

Limits:

  • You have to stay motivated on your own.
  • A course on its own can't hear you.

Here are my two courses:

  • English Pro Lite is free: 45 video lessons (2.5 hours) covering the top vowels, consonants, syllable stress, rhythm, reductions and linking.
  • English Pro is the full program: every vowel, consonant, stress pattern, intonation contour, reduction and linking rule, with thousands of practice exercises, weekly live classes on Zoom, and feedback from me on your recordings. $49.99 a month or $479 lifetime. 10-day money-back guarantee. For intermediate learners and above.

Group Classes

Good for:

  • Fixed start and end dates
  • Accountability
  • Learning alongside other students

Limits:

  • Less individual attention than private coaching.

My 5-Week Intensive Accent Class ($399) gives you daily practice with daily feedback from me, plus a weekly live class in a small group.

A Private Coach

Good for:

  • Finding the exact sounds and patterns that cause the most misunderstandings for you
  • Training built around your job, your vocabulary and real situations like meetings, interviews and presentations
  • Feedback right away, in every session

Limits:

  • It costs more.
  • You still need to practice between sessions.

My private accent training is 1:1 and live on Zoom: $250 an hour, or $1,875 for a 10-hour package, plus a $150 materials fee that includes one year of English Pro.

How to Choose

  • You want to spend nothing and start today: try English Pro Lite.
  • You want a complete plan you can follow on your own: English Pro.
  • You want daily feedback for five weeks: the 5-Week Intensive Accent Class.
  • Clear speech affects your job, or you've practiced on your own without the results you wanted: private training.
  • You're not sure where to start: take my free 2-minute listening quiz to see which sound pairs you miss, or get the optional Speech and Accent Evaluation ($375) for a written report of about 15 pages, your American accent score, and a 20-minute review with me.

What to Look for in Any App, Course or Coach

  • It covers stress, rhythm and intonation, not only individual sounds.
  • It lets you hear yourself, by recording or playback, so you can compare.
  • It explains how sounds are made, not only what they should sound like.
  • It matches your level. Accent training works best once you're at an intermediate level or above.

Common Questions

Can an app replace an accent coach?

For most people, no. An app is useful for extra practice alongside a course or a coach, but a coach can hear which patterns cause misunderstandings, explain why, and show you how to change them.

What's the best free way to improve my American English pronunciation?

Start with English Pro Lite, my free online course with 45 video lessons (2.5 hours). You can also take my free 2-minute listening quiz and use my free accent reduction exercises.

Is English Pro a course or coaching?

It's a self-paced online course with some coaching built in: weekly live classes on Zoom and feedback from me on your recordings. It also includes a private learning community.
