I offer private American accent training for professors, researchers and graduate students who are non-native English speakers. Sessions are one-to-one and live on Zoom.
I'm Julie Cunningham, MA, CCC-SLP, a licensed speech-language pathologist.
Does this describe you?
- You want to use specialized terminology and concepts correctly when you join scholarly discussions.
- You want your lectures to be clear and easy to follow.
- You want to express your ideas clearly when you work with colleagues on research.
- You present at conferences and want to speak clearly.
What we work on
- Academic terminology: pronouncing specialized terms and concepts clearly, including how word stress shifts across word families, as in analyze, analysis and analytical.
- Lectures: speaking clearly so students can follow complex topics.
- Conference talks and research discussions: staying clear and steady when you present or collaborate.
- Stress and rhythm: where the emphasis falls and how words connect at a natural pace.
- Intonation: the rise and fall of your voice when you explain, ask or answer questions.
Private sessions can incorporate your own lectures, conference talks and research vocabulary.

What a scientist says
Hong Y.
Mandarin, Senior Scientist
Before I attended Julie's 4-week seminar, I thought my pronunciation was pretty good. After the first class, I realized that there are still many things I can improve on. The information I learned in her classes helped me to hear and understand better what others are saying. And with practice, I feel others can understand me better as well. This is exactly what I need to improve.
Common questions
Do you offer accent training for professors, researchers and graduate students?
Yes. I coach professors, researchers and graduate students one-to-one, live on Zoom. We practice the speaking situations you face, such as lectures, conference talks and research discussions.
Can we work on the vocabulary I use at work?
Yes. Bring the lecture material, conference talks and research vocabulary you use most, and we build the practice around them.
How many sessions will I need?
A typical client does 10 sessions. Your number depends on your starting point and goals, and we'll talk about it in your free Planning Session.
Are sessions online?
Yes. All sessions are live on Zoom, so you can join from wherever you are. You only need a quiet space, a stable internet connection and a device with a camera and microphone.
