Learn English with the Movies: Megalopolis
It was hyped to be Francis Ford Coppola’s most influential, most consequential, film of all time, one that he first had the idea to create way back in nineteen seventy-seven - that’s forty-seven years ago - and one that cost him one hundred and twenty million dollars of his own money to make.
That’s right - I’m talking about the film Megalopolis, released in September 2024.
Now, by this point, you have probably seen the reviews:
"Three out of four stars" says Roger Ebert dot com.
"Forty six percent" on Rotten Tomatoes.
"A work of absolute madness," says Vulture.
"Five out of ten stars."
"A glorious train wreck."
"Zero out of ten stars."
"Ten out of ten stars."
"One out of ten stars," and then adding salt to the wound: "One of the worst movies I have ever seen."
But does this film live up to that hype - the positive hype? The negative hype? Is it good? Is it bad?
I don’t know. I haven’t seen it. But, what I do know is this short scene I’m about to analyze for you will help you with your English pronunciation skills. Today, you’re going to learn about intonation, rhythm, reductions, linking, and American English pronunciation, all within the context of a short conversation from Megalopolis. So stick around, we’re going to get right to it coming up next.
